Pet Portraits

A custom pet portrait of Alfie, a terrier mix.

I'm fascinated by the colors & textures of feathers & fur and love painting animals of all kinds. I especially take pleasure in capturing the expression of an animal, whether it’s a twinkle in the eye or quirk of the mouth. My portraits capture the distinctive personalities of pets in a natural environment.

My rate is $200 for an 8x10 portrait. Shipping is calculated separately based on location.

My process starts with reference photos of your pet. Choosing the right photo is important, and I'm happy to help with the process. The quality of your photo will determine my ability to capture the spirit and likeness of your pet.

A minimum of two to three quality photos will be necessary for me to paint your pet’s portrait. I need to see photos of your pet that clearly show their distinctive markings from the front and from the side. I will also need a close up of their face. If your pet is a specific breed, please let me know. Quality smartphone videos can also be useful as well if the pet is moving slowly. I can use freeze frames from these videos to view different angles of your pet.

Portraits normally take 6-8 weeks for completion from the date we decide on reference photos.

Please keep in mind that any significant changes to size, subject, positioning & accessories must be requested before you confirm the composition of your portrait. Gouache is not erasable, so I can’t make major adjustments after I start painting

THE PROCESS:

1. Let me know you'd like a portrait

2. Send me pictures and/or video and any special requests (collar, tag, accessories, setting, etc)

3. Purchase your portrait

4. I draw out the composition in pencil and you confirm the sketch via email

5. I paint the rest of the portrait

6. I send the original painting your way!

You will receive:

- The original gouache portrait

- The rights to your pet's image. I reserve the right to include any portraits I paint in my portfolio, but I will not reprint your portrait for resale without your consent.

Please let me know in advance if you need your portrait by a certain date, and I will do my best to work within your time frame. I can often finish your portrait sooner than the standard estimate; but please understand my weekly studio time varies depending on my current portrait queue.

Portraits are shipped flat & unframed via USPS Priority Mail. Shipping is an additional cost, calculated based on your location. All materials are traditional, archival & acid-free.
